Evening with the Spirits

Evening with the Spirits

About

Abingdon's Sinking Spring cemetery has special significance for the Washington County community. This churchyard of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, founded in 1773, lists its first burial in July 1776 when Henry Creswell was killed by Native Americans during Dragging Canoe's campaign against the expanding settlements along the Holston, Watauga, and Nolichucky rivers.

In this popular annual event hosted by the Historical Society of Washington County, VA, you'll meet the spirits of military veterans and their families as presented by local volunteers. At least nine Revolutionary War veterans are among the 3,000 buried in this scenic site, along with veterans of every subsequent American military campaign.

Bring a blanket or lawn chair, relax in front of the 1773-era cabin of Rev. Charles Cummings and his family, and hear the tales and true stories of the dearly departed who fought and died for America's independence and freedom. You may experience a chill autumn breeze - or was that just another spirit saying hello? Admission is $5 to benefit the non-profit Historical Society, and popcorn will be provided.
