Community West African Drum Workshop

Community West African Drum Workshop

About

Tuesday, August 25, 2026 from 5:30pm - 7:00pm at Fort Monroe! All ages are welcome!

Afrcian Landing Commemoration would not be complete without traditional West Afrcian Drumming!!

Step into the rhythm and experience a living tradition. Led by master drummer and cultural arts educator Yao Ababio of Asase Yaa & Ababio Entertainment, this interactive workshop introduces participants to the rhythms, techniques, call-and-response, and communal spirit of West African drumming.

Presented by The DAY Program as part of Rhythms Across Generations: Wellness Through Cultural Traditions, this experience reflects how cultural knowledge continues to move from teacher to student and from generation to generation. Yao is one of the teachers of The DAY Program co-founder Kamiruri "Kam" Kelly, making this gathering a living example of that continuation.

Participants will not simply learn a rhythm-they will experience how the drum can bring people together, carry culture forward, and create connection through shared rhythm.

No previous drumming experience is required.

The activity is free and open to all ages.

SPACE IS LIMITED and registration is required. ONLY 30 students will be accepted. Parents are permitted to watch, but are not counted towards the capacity of the class.

Each student must be listed in registration.
