Community West African Dance Workshop

Community West African Dance Workshop

About

Sunday, August 23, 2026 from 3:30pm - 5:00pm at the Fort Monroe YMCA! Ages 8 to 18 are welcome!

African Landing Commemoration would not be complete without traditional West African Dance!! Experience West African dance as a living expression of rhythm, culture, movement, and community. Led by Yao Ababio of Asase Yaa & Ababio Entertainment, participants will explore traditional movement and the relationship between dancer and drum while building coordination, endurance, confidence, and freedom of expression.

Presented by The DAY Program as part of Rhythms Across Generations: Wellness Through Cultural Traditions, this workshop carries a meaningful connection between generations. Yao is one of the teachers of The DAY Program co-founder Kamiruri "Kam" Kelly, reflecting the way cultural traditions are preserved-not only by remembering them, but by learning them, practicing them, and passing them forward.

Through movement and rhythm, participants become part of that continuing tradition.

All experience levels are welcome.

The activity is free and open to the public.

SPACE IS LIMITED and registration is required. ONLY 30 students will be accepted. Parents are permitted to watch, but are not counted towards the capacity of the class.

Each student must be listed in registration.
