VA250 Dig Day: Walter Reed Birthday Celebration

VA250 Dig Day: Walter Reed Birthday Celebration

About

Join us as we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Walter Reed, a physician and U.S. Army major whose research proved that mosquitoes, not "bad air," spread yellow fever, forever changing the course of public health. This milestone discovery paved the way for the construction of the Panama Canal and saved countless lives worldwide.

This special event takes place at Dr. Reed's birthplace, a 1820 house in Belori, where more than 100 years of preservation work have kept his story and his birthplace alive for future generations. We'll dig into what it takes to preserve a historic site for over a century, and explore how archaeology, biology, and public health intersect at this one-of-a-kind location.

This event is also part of our celebration of Gloucester's 375th anniversary, honoring the people and places that have shaped the county's long history, and Dr. Reed's contributions are a perfect example of Gloucester's impact reaching far beyond its borders and Gloucester History beyond the 250th.
