In the third program of the series "Monroe at the Mill," living history performer Jay Harrison (as James Monroe) will be joined by a panel of historians to examine the enslaved community of Oak Hill, Monroe's Loudoun County farm. After the audience hears from former president Monroe about his daily life in retirement on his farm, Loudoun public historian and author Wynne Saffer and Lori Kimball, Senior Manager of Programs and Education at Oatlands, will introduce attendees to many of the individuals enslaved at Oak Hill. Emily Stanfill, Manager of Student, Family, and Digital Programs at The Montpelier Foundation, will continue the stories of some of these enslaved who were trafficked to Louisiana. Before a Q&A session, Jay will re-join the panel to discuss the challenges and opportunities of interpreting the tough subject of slavery in first-person. Admission is $20 at the door; students admitted free of charge.
