Using examples from the VMFA 's collection, Art Historian Dr. Jeanette Nicewinter explores how materials used in the creation of Ancient American artworks like jade, turquoise, feathers, shells, gold, and silver were highly prized and give meaning based on their association with life-giving forces such as water, the sky, the sun, and the moon.
