Give Me Liberty: Virginia and the Forging of a Nation

About

The Essex County Museum and Historical Society is pleased to present a new exhibit Give Me Liberty: Virginia & The Forging of a Nation, in honor of America’s 250th Anniversary. The exhibition will run from June 25th through August 1st at the Essex History Museum on Water Lane in Tappahannock. This exhibit examines the people, places, and pivotal moments from Virginia that helped shape the birth of American liberty and democracy. Marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, it presents a layered, multifaceted view of Virginia's history, one inseparable from the larger story of the nation itself.
Give Me Liberty sets the stage for the Revolution's origins in Virginia, immersing visitors in the events of 1774 to 1776 and revealing the American Revolution as both a military conflict and a far-reaching transformation of ideas, society, and self-governance.
Give Me Liberty: Virginia & The Forging of a Nation is the signature exhibition of the Virginia America Revolution 250 Commission and organized in partnership by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and the Virginia Museum of History & Culture. It is sponsored in Tappahannock by the Essex County Museum.
In addition to the traveling exhibit on display, there will be several locally curated exhibits examining the contributions made to the war effort by the men and women of Essex County. Also on display will be some of the artifacts uncovered during the renovation of the historic 1710 Tavern, the oldest tavern in Virginia.
