About

"What to the Slave is the 4th of July?" at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley is a FREE presentation celebrating the speech delivered by Frederick Douglass on July 5, 1852, that became one of his most widely known writings. Excerpts of "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" will be read by retired college professors James R. Coates Jr. and Miles K. Davis. Dr. Coates’ areas of expertise are sports, education, and African American history. Dr. Davis, a former college president, is a community advocate and public leader committed to service. Leah Brown, who is assistant director Robert Russa Moton Museum in Farmville, Va., serves as today’s commentator. The program includes a Q&A period. The event is presented in partnership with the Josephine School Community Museum.
